Moose Jaw

Talk about wrong vehicle for the job. My new assignment I started today, is the Re-paving of 15 Wing Moose Jaw's Taxiways and Runways. Today I found myself driving down an empty runway. Too bad I didn't have an Airplane.

It looks like this is going to be a really fun time. really really long hours should mean lots of cash, of which I'm a fan. Also, they aren't shutting down the airport, so we'll be paving one runway while the other is still in use.

So that's my quick update. I'll try to keep it updated more often. At the request of Apples of course.

Update?

I realized today, that I should make myself a interactive google map for where I've worked in the province. This year, I've been limited to the area of Meadow lake, working 20 km west of the 'City' of Meadow Lake. This list so far, over the past 3 years would be.
Lac La Biche
Slave Lake
Sparrwood (fix this)
Candle Lake
Maidstone
Outlook
Wakaw
Kyle
Watrous
Saskatoon
And if I count the many towns I DJ'd in, the list would be longer.
But as for work this summer, I'm working for UMA | AECOM engineering with the municipal engineering department. Currently my project is the Regional Landfill up here by Meadow Lake. The project should be wrapping up soon and hopefully will be almost all done by the end of the week. I am tempted to see if there are any geocaches in the area, because as of right now I really want to either find one or hide one, and that's because I could guarantee it's location to just a few centimeters horizontally and vertically. The weather up here has been amazing as well, talk about blue sky. The site here is located on top of a hill, not a big hill, but it means I basically am the highest point in every direction, which would make you assume that being on top of a hill, you'd get good cell coverage, which of course is rubbish.

Spending many hours in my truck, I have learned a few new uses for some of my things. My dog, which is unnamed, that Ellyse made me, works perfectly as a neck support as this Trucks headrests don't really work as headrests. I've also found it valuable to have not thrown out an old bunnyhug from high school as it's the perfect thing to wear surveying, as I don't care if it gets paint on it.

I've found more Cherry Fresca which is odd because I love the stuff, but isn't the point of these drinks to have sugar in it? I now realize why it hasn't been perking me up.

Right now, I'm looking foreword to getting home, going for a bike ride, being sore as hell, going canoeing, being sore as hell, going Go-Carting, beating Lisa in our rematch, and seeing Ellyse, where she'll probably make me shave..

Ta ta for now from up north.

Vista

One, Two, Three, Four. I declare a Vista War!

Windows Vista doesn't suck!

Yes I said it, I've used it, and it works fine. The problem I've noticed that everyone has with Vista is with Laptops. Now, I want to ask you a question, if your on a mac, how do you connect to a wireless network?

Now, if your on a vista laptop, how do you?

I'm going to guess that the Vista user will have a much longer explanation, and here's why. There's too much software shipped on laptops to do the function of software already in the system. With a recently purchased laptop for use with cross country saskatchewan, I couldn't get it to connect to our home network, after returning it to future shop and having them reset the thing, it still didn't work. And I think I know why, Toshiba ships it's own utility for joining wireless networks. Ok, thanks toshiba, but as a long time windows user why can't I just use the control panel and the little network logo next to the clock? Because of this duplication of software to do the same thing, it wouldn't work. It seems that PC manufactures are the ones wrecking Vista. They are each trying to make it better, why not just build a better computer, buy buying a computer with Vista, I'd expect that I'd use Vista to do what I want, not some crappy Toshiba utility that causes the system to not work!

The point I'm making is, no matter what computer I sit down at, I want it to be consistent. I don't care what the computer looks like on the outside, but I want to know how everything works because I've already used windows Vista on a different computer. It's the inconsistency that is driving people crazy, and the consistency of OS X that has driven most of the people I know to recently buy Mac notebooks instead of windows.

I have not much to do out here at night in Meadow, and too much time to think.

Feb Break!

I love vacations!

February Break is always loads of fun. This past year has been no exception. So far I haven't done really anything, and that's exactly what I want to be doing. I'm typing this while in transit up to the Western Canadian Cross Country Ski Championships in La Ronge. Saskatchewan hasn't hosted Wetern's for years so even though I'm not really in top shape, I'll be having fun skiing the trails.

Last week I had the awesome opportunity to record a podcast along with Doug, Greg, and Frankie. It was a fun time and I realize that I may know a lot of music, but there is loads more out there for me to get my hands on. You'd think I'd have a loaded iPod; however it's only got about 1900 tracks on it. So hopefully the sound post will become a fun show for all involved and I'd recommend listening if you like to hear new music, or music you might not have heard on the radio.

Finally, Last week, one of my teachers from high school, Don Wilde, died. He was not only a teacher to me, but a mentor and friend. Here i was a kid in grade 9, 2 months into high school, told that I was going to run the lights for the school musical. I realize now that one of the reasons I loved working with light and sound wasn't the technology, but the independence that the activity allowed. By grade 12, I was organizing our activities and able to run all of our equipment fluently. I realize that Mr. Wilde probably didn't know how to use the lighting board, but he trusted the students to learn how, making you feel that you were needed for a smooth operation. My problem solving abilities were quite honed during that time. "hey lee, no sound out of channel 4, you check the mic backwards I'll start here and move towards you". It also helps with just general confidence, ohh I have to up on the lift to the ceiling and bold this light up there by holding it out in front of me.... hmmm well, I'll just have to trust that I've got the arm strength. I'm now just so comfortable in a pair of jeans, long sleeve t shirt with an adjustable spanner (wrench) sticking out my back pocket.
He's also the one who got me first really using Apple computers, and well, I'm sure you all now know that I'm somewhat of an apple fanboy/nerd. Slowing down the garage door effect anybody? It's unfortunate he's gone, and he will be missed by many.

Too Long...

Well, I realized It's been way too long since posting on here.

This past weekend, Had an awesome time attending Free Beer and witnessing the christening of some new poofies. I also took the opportunity to actually drink at free beer! So I ended up squeezing myself into an awkward opportunity (Check the pictures). I'm really enjoying classes this term and am looking forward to my term project in my environmental assessment class. I guess we get to come up with our own sustainable design of the new engineering building. Should be a fun time!

Time to get back to class.

Update

Wow, this blog has been dead. Mostly due to the fact i've been so busy recently. And I haven't turned to blogging to waste my time, I've developed better study skills.

A few announcements, I have a new place to post pictures. flickr.com/photos/scotttheede
So that's where you will be able to find all the new pictures i post in FULL Resolution. Facebook is great for pictures but the quality really sucks if you want to use the picture for anything. So here you can get the pics in their full, hi-resolution.

Not much is new with my life, I'm sorta missing work, worked with some fun people, Mike Paik, Liz, Krystin, Theresa, (so I dare add Sean?). I also miss the paychecks.

I've also had the most awkward mid-terms. I've had one or 2 a week for 4 or 5 weeks, So they just haven't stopped. I'm also really happy about my Plant Science 314 mid-term, got my first 100% on a university test, and maybe first 100% for a long time. I don't really remember getting any in high school.

Schools going good, feel a lot more motivated this year and I also really mid my grandma's but this time when I think about them, I don't just shut down. I know that their somewhere, and I should get back to my homework. I'm also going to apply for WEC (Western Engineering Competition) which hopefully goes through, I'm still torn on what I'd compete in, extemporaneous debate, communication, or consulting.

As for entertainment these days, I'm not watching much TV, I'm downloading episodes of How I Met Your Mother and that's it for new TV, the rest of the stuff I'm downloading as podcasts, The Totally Rad Show is awesome and diggnation is still good, but they don't seem to be as drunk as they used to be. Other than that I've been trying to study more and so Haven't been getting out as much, sorry if the means I haven't been available, but homework does come first. However I do now have a cellphone, so if you feel like doing something, call me, just ask for the number.

Thanks for the read.

The 1 Feature Pownce did right and Facebook needs

This is the one feature that Facebook has lacked since I've been a member and it really gets on my nerves. Friends. I've got people adding me as friends that I wouldn't really say are my friend, yet I accept them because, if they really want to follow stories about me in their little feed then all the will to them.

Pownce does this incredibly better by allowing you to be a Fan of somebody, I know the say Kevin Rose or Leo Laporte have absolutely no wish to follow the musings of a Engineering Student in Saskatoon. But I have the wish to follow their musings. Bascially a fan is a one say friend, you can see them but they can't see you.

I really want to thank people the following people on Facebook for letting me following them by being their 'friend' even though we aren't.
-Merlin Mann
-John Gormley
-Dave Scharf
-Rick Mercer
-Jack Layton
-Stéphane Dion

I like pownce and how it functions but only problem is there is 1 person on there that I know, 1. I've got hundreds of friends on Facebook thats the network that's popular here so Please, add this feature Facebook!

August Cleaning

I've been busy going through my computer and I've realized (due to the comment of somebody) that I'm a packrat when it comes to old files. I've got files on my computer that I in no way need. For example, these are files or random bits of information that is stored on my computer.

In my address book entry for Nathan, I have his waist size listed. Now why I even wrote that down doesn't make sense, I don't recall ever buying nathan pants.

I have a thinggie I created about how Small Talk costs lives, however the file is called Tahereh.doc It must have been for her or something.

I have the Oedipus the Musical script! This was in Grade 10! I know i've probably backed it up as a text file but WHY? why would I need that during my daily life. Reading it now maybe it's because that the sarcastic comments written mostly by Shawn are just hilarious.

Creon: Will you shut up and listen for once? (Sarcastically: oh I solved a puzzle so I’m a king oohhh! I’m intelligent, hhaha!) (That’s in a Scott kinda voice…)

Oedipus: (if you don’t know I’m not gonna tell you!!) Did you or did you not urge me to talk to that blind fool they called the prophet? (yah that cool guy!!)

Oedipus: You will not find any evidence of my guilt in this crime. (Ha ha ha right like we haven’t heard that before…)

Oedipus: He plots to overthrow me.(and get Melissa in bed)

Ok I'm done with that.

I also found a commentary I did in the style of Rex Murphy, reading it now I totally forgot how much fun it was to do that project, along with trying to speak in that style in which Rex Murphy makes William Shatners speech pattern normal.

I also probably found the best math class quote I've so far had. "Don't so something stupid like that or i'll go through your test and find other places to take off marks." Charles Cuell, Math 116.

As for me I should return to watching a back-hoe lay sand in the hole on highway 4. Dena, please take the detour and don't drive into the pit. I've also been surveying here having no survey experience with a Rod & Level. And probably already learned more than you would in Survey Camp.

Well Back to work

(About 3 min after i finished the bulk of this, a Semi decided to drive through a bunch of signs and just about drive into the big hole in the road)
